Johannes Wessmark
Johannes Wessmark is a Swedish-born hyperrealist painter whose work transcends photography through exceptional technical precision and emotional depth. Born in Karlstad in 1962, Wessmark spent over 15 years working in advertising and computer graphics before committing fully to fine art in 2006.
Working primarily in acrylic and oil, Wessmark is best known for his highly detailed figurative paintings, often depicting the human body in water. His practice explores themes of beauty, vulnerability, light, and stillness, capturing fleeting moments that feel both intimate and timeless. His ability to render skin, reflections, and transparency has positioned him as one of the leading voices in contemporary hyperrealism.
Wessmark’s work has been featured in international publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist, American Art Collector, and Artist Magazine. His paintings are held in public and private collections worldwide, including the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona and the Count Ibex Collection in Europe. He has exhibited internationally and has taught workshops in the United States, Germany, and Sweden.
Today, Wessmark continues to work between Sweden and the United States and is represented by galleries internationally, including Gefen Gallery. His work is sought after by collectors and institutions alike for its rare ability to merge technical mastery with emotional resonance. At the core of his practice is a quiet intensity a commitment to slowing time, elevating the everyday, and revealing the fragile beauty that exists between reality and perception.
